No More Smart, Less Angry Bitch Face, And The Differences Of This Years Celtics!
The last two seasons of Celtics Basketball can best be described using one word: Heartbreak. In fairness the Celtics have several built in excuses they could have used for why this happened: Their head coach was a scumbag who got suspended, Marcus Smart was a cancer, Joe Mazzulla doesn't know how to coach, Brad Stevens didn't do enough at the trade deadline, etc. Let's look at a few of those excuses and their true impact.
I personally think it is absolutely 100% clear that Marcus Smart truly was a cancer on the team. The proof of this is in the pudding. I have said since the team made the trade for Porzingis that if they did this two years ago, we would be talking today about a team that won back to back NBA championships. The way the team plays, minus Smart, is so much more free and so much more together. Do you think Derrick White is the impact player he is right now with Smart here? I certainly don't. The addition of Porzingis has made this team as complete as they have ever been in the Jayson Tatum/Jaylen Brown era.
In terms of Brad Stevens, in my opinion the man's first ever major trade should define who he is as an executive. He traded Kemba Walker and relieved the team of any salary that Walker was owed. This was a guy that nobody wanted for anything other than a bag of balls. Yes the Celtics gave up a 2021 first round draft pick and a 2025 second round draft pick, but they were able to get out from under the $73 million left on Walker's deal with the Celtics. They also received a 2023 second round pick and my man Big Al Horford in return. Stevens was playing chess while the Thunder were playing checkers.
In terms of the former Mr. Angry Bitch Face, Jayson Tatum has shown an immense amount of intellectual growth this season, that I think was the most glaring weakness he had in years past. After the team's 116-107 victory over the Cavaliers on December 14, Tatum said, "Sometimes we have to do a lot less to achieve a lot more." I almost had to go change my pants and my immediate reaction was, "Who is this man and what have they done with Jayson Tatum?" I believe that if this is the Tatum we are going to see in the long run, the Celtics will have an impressive run that should last quite some time.
